singer/television host/actor/record-label founder

Known for:   Jan Smit (born Johannes Hendricus Maria Smit on December 31, 1985, in Volendam, Netherlands) is a Dutch singer, songwriter, television presenter, actor, and record producer. He is best known for his distinctive pop and schlager sound and for being one of the most recognizable voices to emerge from the traditional Dutch music scene. Smit first rose to fame at the age of ten when he recorded the duet “Mama” with the popular Dutch group BZN. Soon after, performing under the name “Jantje Smit,” he released “Ik zing dit lied voor jou alleen” (“I Sing This Song Just for You”), which became a major number-one hit in the Netherlands. His success as a child star was unprecedented, and he quickly became a national favorite. As he matured, Smit dropped the diminutive “Jantje” and continued performing simply as Jan Smit. Over the years he built an impressive career that has spanned nearly three decades, characterized by chart-topping singles, platinum albums, and sold-out concerts both in the Netherlands and across German-speaking Europe. His music style—rooted in palingsound, the smooth pop tradition of his hometown Volendam—has evolved to include contemporary pop and sentimental ballads that connect deeply with audiences. In addition to his singing career, Jan Smit has become a beloved television personality in the Netherlands. He has hosted and appeared in numerous shows, including Gewoon Jan Smit, Idols, and served for many years as the Dutch commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2015, he joined the German schlager trio KLUBBB3, further expanding his international appeal, and later became a member of De Toppers, one of the Netherlands’ most popular music groups.
